Tears clouded her vision, something she didn’t allow in front of the families. She wiped them and nodded. “I’ll do that.”

“How old is she?” he asked.

“Five months, and she’s already giggling.” Mallory laughed. “Especially before bedtime. We call her our giggle box. My husband is home with her right now. I hope she loves him as much as Lizzy loved you.”

He nodded and left the room with Calvin.

The recovery team walked in and began the transfer. “Good work, Mallory. We didn’t think he’d ever consent.”

As she helped push the bed down the hall, her phone rang. “I’ll be right there, guys.” She stepped into a quiet space and answered the FaceTime call. “Hi, Kylie. Mama misses you so much.” Her daughter’s big blue eyes popped out at her in the small screen.

Lawson smiled as he held her for Mallory to see. “She’s a stinker tonight. Keeps spitting her mashed beans out at me.” He looked down at his shirt to show her.

She laughed. He still took her breath away with his intense blue eyes and stubble. And the way he was with their daughter made her heart melt. She sure loved her daddy. “Kylie, you be good for Daddy and eat your dinner.”

Kylie smiled, showing her chin cleft matching Lawson’s, and touched the screen before gumming Lawson’s hand. Teething and drooling were part of their days now.

Sadie barked in the background as well as their new dog, Stormy. Kylie looked behind her and pointed. Her old kitchen had been renovated, and they were working on the rest of the house.

Mallory laughed. “Okay, babe, gotta run. They’re waiting for me.”

  “You got him to consent?”

“Yep. He was just an upset father who was protecting his daughter. He didn’t understand how it all worked, but now he seems to.”

“That’s the Mallory I know and love. Good work, babe.”

She grinned, proud of herself and loving that he was also proud.

“Say night-night to Mama.” He waved her little hand, making her giggle.

“Night-night, sweet girl. I love you.”

He grinned. “Wake me when you get home. Now that Kylie’s in her crib, I want some Mama time. We can work on another one.” He cocked his brow, covering Kylie’s ears. He glanced down at her clothes. “Let me see you in your scrubs.”

Grinning, she lowered the phone down to her blue cotton attire.

  “Yum.”

Laughing, she said, “Yeah, I could use some time with you, too. Have you talked to Julia? I was supposed to text her but got caught up in this case.”

“Yes, and she said she’d bring Robbie tomorrow. That kid’s a tank for three months!”

“Already a football player in the making, I think. Love you, babe.”

He smiled and blew her a kiss. “I love you, too. Remember…wake me.”

Mallory closed her phone and ran down the hall to scrub in.

  She was back.
